America overall is a compassionate nation. In 2015, Americans donated more than $373 billion to charities, a record high, according to Giving USA.
“The U.S. is a generous country,” says William Chopik, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, who co-authored
research about nations and empathy. “America is always coming to other countries’ aid whenever there’s a disaster. And hand in hand with that, we also have an unusually high volunteering rate.”
But some cities seem to be more caring than others. Realtor.com®’s research team sought to find out the most compassionate cities in the country, ranking 250 of the largest cities on factors such as percentage of income donated, volunteer rate, public charities per capita, percentage of people working in social services or nonprofit organizations, and more.
The following cities are the most caring, according to realtor.com®’s analysis:
- Provo, Utah
- Ann Arbor, Mich.
- Richmond, Va.
- Durham, N.C.
- Charleston, S.C.
- Atlanta, Ga.
- Alexandria, Va.
- Birmingham, Ala.
